“Old Guard” & “Atomic Blonde” Sequel Talk

Netflix’s “The Old Guard” released on Friday and sentiment towards the action feature seems to be quite good – so much so that there has already been questions about a potential sequel.

Charlize Theron stars in the film as Andromache, the leader of an immortal group of mercenaries trying to fight for good over the centuries.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “THE OLD GUARD”

The film ends with a scene in which Booker (Matthais Shoenaerts), beginning his century of banishment, finding an unexpected guest – Andromache’s former right-hand who had been locked in an iron maiden and thrown in the ocean over five centuries ago – left to drown but never die for eternity.

Collider spoke with director Gina Prince-Bythewood about the film and asked if that final scene means we’ll get a sequel:

“It was part of the graphic novel, and I always loved it because I felt there would have been a hole if it didn’t end the way it did. There’s always a fear because you don’t want to annoy an audience. I know how I feel when things are left open, but for me, we told the story. It does have a beginning, middle, and end. And then, there is a hint and a possibility of more, but that’s absolutely up to the audience. Greg has always envisioned this as a trilogy. I know where the story is going and it’s pretty dope. So, if the audience wants more, there’s certainly more story to tell.”

Prince-Bythewood also says had the film been a theatrical release, it would’ve been a post-credits tags. But with Netflix’s system asking you to ‘watch something else’ as soon as the credits roll, they made the decision to make it part of the ending.

END SPOILERS FOR “THE OLD GUARD”

The film has been a success, snagging the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched list over the weekend and is expected to dominate that chart for the next few weeks to come.

Meanwhile Theron herself spoke with Total Film (via Games Radar) who also asked her about an “Old Guard” sequel. She says that while nothing is set in stone, she did confirm that a follow-up to the David Leitch-directed “Atomic Blonde” could be in the works for Netflix:

“We took [Atomic Blonde 2] to them and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it. We talked to him about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now. That character was set up in a way where she didn’t really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there’s a lot of potential there. The bar’s pretty high, but we’re excited about it.”

The 2017 film made only $100 million worldwide, though was in profit thanks to it only costing $30 million.
