HBO has premiered the official trailer and a new featurette for its forthcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon” which debuts on the service on August 21st.
The trailer arrives as THR has done an extensive two-part preview of the ten-episode first season of the series and revealed some new information.
As we know, the series will begin 300 years before the events of the main ‘Thrones’ series – but it turns out time will be fairly fluid in the series with the series to take multiple time-jumps and thus recast its key roles (ala “The Crown”) albeit with new actors not just with new seasons but within seasons. Director Miguel Sapochnik explains the core of the show:
“The main characters are two women and two men. There’s the king (Viserys), his brother (Daemon), the king’s daughter (Rhaenyra), and her best friend (Alicent). Then the best friend becomes the king’s wife and thereby the queen.
That in itself is complicated – when your best friend goes and marries your dad. But from the tiniest things, it slowly evolves this gigantic battle between two sides.”
The series begins with Emily Carey and Milly Alcock starring as Rhaenyra and Alicent respectively before the show jumps ahead a decade and replaces them with Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke. The show is expected to then have more multi-year jumps over the season.
In addition, the showrunners say they’ve mapped out the series’ storyline and hope it will run for three or four seasons.
