After winning the Golden Lion at Venice, “The Rider” and Marvel’s “Eternals” filmmaker Chloe Zhao’s new feature “Nomadland” just snagged the top honor of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival 2020.
The honor means the film is effectively guaranteed a Best Picture Oscar nomination and has a very good chance of winning. Previous winners include “Jojo Rabbit,” “Green Book,” “Three Billboards…,” “La La Land,” “Room,” “The Imitation Game,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Where Do We Go Now,” “The King’s Speech,” “Precious” and “Slumdog Millionaire”.
Regina King’s “One Night in Miami” and Tracy Deer’s “Beans” were runners up with ‘Miami’ also expected to be a likely Oscar nominee. Seven of the last ten years has seen either a People’s Choice winner or nominee take the Best Picture Oscar.
The People’s Choice Documentary Award winner is Michelle Latimer’s “Inconvenient Indian,” and the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award went to “Shadow in the Cloud” by Roseanne Liang.
