“Nomadland” Sets Multiple Festival Launches

Breaking through with the highly acclaimed “The Rider” and currently in post-production on Marvel Studios’ “Eternals,” the little road movie that director Chloe Zhao’s shot amidst those other two has set an ambitious world premiere plan.

“Nomadland,” which stars Frances McDormand, will screen at the Venice, Toronto and New York festivals as part of their solidarity pact in the wake of the pandemic. The film will also be included in a special Telluride-hosted drive-in event in Los Angeles.

Based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 novel, McDormand plays Fern, a woman in her sixties who loses everything in the Great Recession. She embarks on a journey through the vast landscape of the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.

Searchlight Pictures picked up worldwide rights to the film last year and the fest premieres will come ahead of a domestic theatrical release this fall and subsequent rollout internationally.
