Nintendo Switch Pro Gets OLED Screen

Nintendo reportedly looks likely to unveil a ‘Pro’ model of its Switch gaming console later this year, one equipped with a bigger Samsung OLED display according to a new report at Bloomberg.

Samsung Display Co. will start mass production of seven-inch, 720p-resolution OLED panels as early as June with an initial monthly target of just under a million units. The displays are slated for shipment to assemblers around July.

The Switch is heading into its fifth year and continues to sell well against both the Xbox and PlayStation – helped by titles like “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” and a semiconductor shortage limiting the supply of rival machines.

However, the console is now being seen as underpowered compared to the new kids on the block and talk of a more premium version of the Switch with an OLED screen and support for 4K graphics have been circling.

While Nintendo has stayed radio silent, Samsung’s involvement is the strongest indication the company is serious about updating the console and the 7-inch rigid OLED panels are expected to consume less battery, offer higher contrast and possibly faster response time than the current 6.2-inch LED LCD displays.
