Nielsen: Streaming Overtakes Broadcast TV

A new monthly measurement from rating analytics giants Nielsen has revealed that streaming has now outpaced broadcast in terms of time spent watching TV.

Nielsen’s ‘The Gauge’ indicates across all television homes in May, streaming services accounted for 26% of TV usage – passing the 25% of regular broadcast TV. Cable TV was still at the top with 39% of viewing, while 9% has been classified as ‘other’ viewing which covers things like regular VOD, disc playback, gaming, and streaming done through a cable set top box.

Brian Fuhrer, SVP of Product Strategy at Nielsen says the past year has seen the television viewing landscape “categorically shifted” thanks to the changes many made to enable streaming coupled with the variety of newly introduced services.

Even as people return to pre-pandemic activities, they expect people to keep sampling and exploring their options away from more traditional TV distribution platforms.

Among the top streamers, Netflix tied with YouTube & YouTube TV at 6%, Hulu snagged 3%, Amazon Prime was at 2% and Disney+ was at 1%.
