New Zealand Re-Opening For Business

New Zealand is set to end not just social distancing but all other domestic coronavirus restrictions beginning tomorrow – making it the largest market so far to eliminate transmission of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, whose handling of the outbreak has drawn global praise, says the the focus now will be on an economic rebuild. This will include the allowance once again of public and private events, retail, hospitality businesses, all public transport, and no limits on gathering sizes.

Cinemas have been open for a few weeks and what remain are expected to fully open follow the easing of restrictions. Borders will, however, remain closed to foreigners for the time being.

Special dispensation was granted to 55 crew members working on the “Avatar” sequels who are currently halfway through observing a 14-day isolation period. Film and TV production, worth several billion to the economy, is aiming to get back to full speed ASAP.

New Zealand joins just eight other countries with no active COVID-19 cases including Montenegro, Papau New Guinea, the Seychelles and Fiji.
