New “Watchmen” Animated Film Coming

Warner Bros. Pictures

DC has announced two new animated movies in the works – a new adaptation of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an adaptation of “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths”.

The reveal took place at San Diego Comic-Con after a screening of “Justice League: Warworld,” an upcoming animated feature from DC animation set in their shared ‘Tomorrowverse’ initiative that began in 2020.

The “Watchmen” film will be R-rated but no other details about the release have been announced at this time so it’s not clear if this is a direct adaptation, or a potential sequel like the HBO live-action series was.

The original 1986 “Watchmen” comic was previously adapted for the screen by Zack Snyder in 2009, though that film famously changed the ending.

Similarly “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was also a famed comic book crossover event in 1985, one of the most influential story arcs in comic book history and dealt with the multiverse as things were compressed into a single unified DC verse – causing a shift to all comics being published going forward.

“Watchmen” and “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths” will both be released direct to streaming and on disc in 2024. “Justice League: Warworld” will be available on disc and digital from Tuesday.
