New Trailers: Empty, Sylvie, Ammonite, Woman

A whole bunch of new trailers have gone online in the last few days for some small yet often acclaimed films on the way from some arthouse labels.

The Empty Man
One of the few films opening in cinemas soon, namely next Friday, “The Empty Man” begins when a group of teens from a small Midwestern town begin to mysteriously disappear, the locals believe it is the work of an urban legend known as The Empty Man.

As a retired cop investigates and struggles to make sense of the stories, he discovers a secretive group and their attempts to summon a horrific, mystical entity, and soon his life is in grave danger. James Badge Dale, Samantha Logan, Stephen Root, Joel Courtney, Marin Ireland, and Aaron Poole star.

Sylvie’s Love
Amazon Prime Video has released the official trailer for Eugene Ashe’s romance drama “Sylvie’s Love” starring Tessa Thompson, Nnamdi Asomugha, Eva Longoria, Aja Naomi King, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, and Jemima Kirke. The film launchss worldwide on Prime Video on December 25th.

Set against a hot New York summer of 1957. Robert (Asomugha), a saxophonist and member of a jazz quartet meets Sylvie (Thompson), a record store worker waiting for her fiance to return from war. When Robert takes a part-time job at the record store, the two begin a friendship that sparks a deep but short-lived passion. Years later they meet again, the flame still very much there.

Ammonite
“God’s Own Country” director Francis Lee’s period lesbian romance drama “Ammonite” has scored its trailer ahead of the November 13th release in the United States and in the UK early next year.

Set in the 1840s, Kate Winslet plays self-taught palaeontologist Mary Anning who works alone on the wild and brutal Southern English coastline. Entrusted with the care of a man’s wife (Saoirse Ronan) recuperating from a personal tragedy, the two women begin a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds.

I’m Your Woman
Amazon Prime has released the trailer for “Fast Color” and “Stargirl” director Julia Hart’s new film “I’m Your Woman” which opens in select cinemas on December 4th before hitting the streamer a week later. The story follows a young woman and 1970s housewife whose life is upended when her thief husband disappears and she’s forced to go on the run. Rachel Brosnahan, Bill Heck and Arinze Kene co-star.

Dead Reckoning
Shout! Studios has released the first trailer for the K.J. Apa-led indie action-thriller “Dead Reckoning” coming to VOD and digital platforms on November 13th. Andrzej Bartkowiak helms the film from a script by Alfred Wayne Carter and Kristin Alexandre.

The story follows a young woman (India Eisley) getting over her parents’ death in a private plane crash a few weeks earlier and engaging in a summer romance with local cab driver Niko (Apa). Trouble is, she doesn’t know his brother (Scott Adkins) is the terrorist who sabotaged the plane and is planning a major bombing.

Clouds
Disney+ has released the new trailer for Justin Baldoni’s new drama “Clouds” which tells the true story of singer-songwriter Zach Sobiech and launches today. The true story tale follows Zach Sobiech (Fin Argus), a musically gifted 17-year old living with a rare bone cancer (osteosarcoma). We follow Zach’s journey over the course of his senior year as he navigates the complexities of love, friendship, family, and leaving behind a musical legacy.

The Kid Detective
Evan Morgan (“The Dirties”) helms the indie comedy/murder mystery tale “The Kid Detective” which launches in select cinemas today. The story follows once-celebrated kid detective Abe Applebaum (Adam Brody), now 31, who continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bout of self-pity. Until a naive client (Sophie Nelisse) brings him his first ‘adult’ case – to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.

All My Life
Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Marc Meyers’ upcoming romance drama film “All My Life”. The story centers around the love story of a young couple whose wedding plans are thrown off course when the groom is diagnosed with liver cancer. Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr. star in the film which presently has no U.S. release date but hits the UK this Friday.
