Mark Edward Fischbach, better known as YouTuber ‘Markiplier,’ is trying feature filmmaking with the horror feature “Iron Lung,” which is finally making its way to cinemas.
The project is said to be based on David Szymanski’s bestselling 2022 submarine horror game of the same name. That game followed a silent protagonist that controls a midget submarine.
Gameplay is set entirely within the one-room submarine, with minimal room to move around. With no viewing ports, the player must use their map and the submarine’s camera to navigate – and certain events can also occur at various points, such as oxygen and pressure changes.
Markiplier isn’t silent in the new trailer for the film, which is pretty much all his creation – he stars, produces and directs the film from his own script, and he self-financed the project with Caroline Rose Kaplan co-starring.
Fischbach created his channel in 2012 and became known for his playthroughs of survival horror games and soon became one of the top five highest-paid YouTube stars, along with co-hosting popular podcasts. He’s also the co-founder and creative director of the clothing company Cloak.
Andrew Hulshult does the music while Will Hyde and Jeff Guerrero produce the project, which opens in cinemas January 30th.
