A decision regarding who may play the new big-screen Superman and Lois Lane could come within the new few days.
THR has done a break down on the recent screen tests for James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” and offered some new details about what took place.
Said screen tests took place on the weekend of June 17th at the Warners lot in Burbank with Gunn subsequently showing the assembled cuts to a deciding committee of executives – including Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Gunn reportedly assembled three actors and three actresses who, on the first day of the testing, were seen in predetermined pairs: Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan; Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor; and David Corenswet and Emma Mackey.
The pairs were given several scenes to film in which the males were in makeup and wardrobe as Daily Planet reporter Kent while the females were journalist Lane.
Then on Sunday, the three men did another series of screen tests, this time in costume as Superman. Only Mackey was brought in that day to portray Lane opposite the trio of actors.
The trade’s sources caution that just because Mackey was the only one involved on the second day it does not mean she is the front-runner for Lane.
Gunn had an assembled cut of the screen tests by Wednesday to show to Warners execs with a decision potentially coming this week.
Once its made, Gunn will quickly get into the next key role with the shortlist for villain Lex Luthor said to include siblings Alexander and Bill Skarsgard. It’s not clear whether Hoult, who was initially wanted for the part before deciding to try for Kent/Superman, would try for the role. Other roles to be cast include members the Authority.
Gunn hopes to have Superman: Legacy before cameras in early 2024, in time for a July 11th 2025 release. The movie will attempt to begin a whole new slate based on the DC characters – hopefully avoiding the problems that “The Flash” has been undergoing at the box-office.
