New “Street Fighter” Film Sets Its Directors

Capcom

Twin Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, the creators of the recent Sundance horror sensation “Talk to Me,” are in final negotiations to direct the new “Street Fighter” film at Legendary and Capcom.

Legendary acquired the film and TV rights to the video game franchise earlier this month. The long enduring fighting video game gets a new installment with “Street Fighter VI” in June and began life with the 1987 arcade game.

With 1991’s “Street Fighter II,” it became a pop culture icon and mainstay and the franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide to date.

Conversations with a list of writers is reportedly currently underway. Considering the hiring has taken place just weeks after Legendary obtained the rights, the studio is seemingly moving forward fast on the film in conjunction with Capcom who is helping produce.

It’s not clear which characters will be involved at this point, or what kind of rating they will be aiming for – the hiring of the Philippous suggest it might go harder core than previous films in the series.

The property was previously adapted both as the infamous 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen, and the 2009 “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” with Kristin Kreuk.

The Philippou brothers also ran a very popular YouTube channel named RackaRacka. A24 will be releasing “Talk to Me” on July 28th.
