“District 9” and “Chappie” filmmaker Neill Blomkamp may have failed to get his attempted direct sequel to “Aliens” off the ground, but the helmer has locked onto another classic Fox sci-fi property that he’s hoping to resuscitate – Robocop.
Nearly a full year ago it was announced that Blomkamp would be working on “RoboCop Returns,” a film that – much like last year’s “Halloween” and to a lesser extent this year’s “Terminator” – would ignore the previous sequels and serve as a direct follow-up to the Paul Verhoeven 1987 original.
After many months of radio silence, Blomkamp has now posted a progress update on the film on Twitter, saying: “Script is being written. Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow-up film.” Asked if the design of RoboCop will be reminiscent of the original film or closer to that of the 2014 remake, Blomkamp said: “1 million% original.”
No release date is set for “RoboCop Returns” and it’s not clear if Peter Weller will be reprising the role of Murphy under the armor.
