Disney+ has premiered several new first-look photos from its upcoming original fantasy-infused, coming-of-age action comedy series “American Born Chinese” which is set to premiere on the streamer later this year.
The series is based on the acclaimed 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The story follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a seemingly average teenager who struggles to balance his high school social life with his family life.
However, when he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, worlds will collide as he becomes entangled in a battle of Chinese mythical gods.
The project marks something of a reunion of the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu all starring in supporting roles in this.
Yeoh plays Guanyin, a Bodhisattva who is often associated with compassion. The series also stars Daniel Wu as the Monkey King,
The series is set to be a Disney+ original produced by 20thTelevision. Kelvin Yu (“Bob’s Burgers”) serves as executive producer and showrunner, whilst “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” helmer Destin Daniel Cretton is set to direct and also serves as executive producer.
Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley, Asher Goldstein, and Gene Luen Yang also executive produce. No potential air date for the series has been set beyond sometime this year.
