“New Mutants” VOD Pre-Order Briefly Appears

The “X-Men” spin-off film “The New Mutants” has made headlines today for an unexpected reason.

The Marvel Comics adaptation, the last of the 20th Century Studios “X-Men” titles to be made before Fox was sold to Disney, suddenly popped up for pre-order in both SD & HD on Amazon Prime this morning for a costly $25.99.

That listing, which had no release date, has since been removed. The Josh Boone-directed film’s pre-order page only appeared on that outlet, not on Apple, Vudu, Google Play, or YouTube.

Since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown, there’s long been talk of the film jumping to either premium VOD or a premiere through either Hulu or Disney+ – the latter options unlikely due to existing Fox/HBO cable rights deals.

At the same time, shots of some of the film’s monsters like Demon Bear and Smiley Men have gone online an appear to be screen captures as opposed from a digital copy of the film as opposed to full publicity stills.

Did Amazon jump the gun? Disney’s Bob Iger recently said more small movies originally meant for theatrical release will pivot to digital just as they did for the much more costly “Artemis Fowl”.

Whatever the case, we expect to learn more during Disney’s earnings call tomorrow which will offer updates on its slate.
