“New Mutants” Still Set For Late August

Disney and Fox’s “X-Men” horror spin-off “The New Mutants,” delayed numerous times in the past two years, reportedly remains on track to open on the weekend of August 28th.

In fact, Disney sent exhibitors plans yesterday outlining the U.S. domestic theatrical release, including news that tickets can be sold starting the morning of August 18th. One exhibitor tells Variety: “It’s for sure opening August 28th.”

It’s still possible that Disney could amend those plans, but it now appears as if the film will be the first new theatrical release from a major studio since the pandemic forced U.S. cinemas to close in March.

It’s unclear where the film will be able to play as less than a quarter of the country’s 6,021 venues have reopened according to Comscore. Movie theaters in New York City and Los Angeles remain closed without a set date to reopen.

Disney has done fairly minimal promotion for the film, and recently announced “Mulan” is skipping U.S. theaters and premiering on Disney+ while even Warners’ “Tenet” is staggering its rollout. The Russell Crowe-led thriller “Unhinged” will be the first film from any distributor to hit cinemas, it will arrive August 21st.
