This week sees the release of “Regretting You,” the new Allison Williams-led romantic drama from “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Stuck in Love” filmmaker Josh Boone.
It marks his fourth directorial effort overall and arrives five years after his third – the Marvel Comics adaptation “The New Mutants”.
That “X-Men” spin-off was released back in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and marked the final Marvel movie released under 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the company.
As a result, the title was kicked around like a football for a while there, with reshoots planned and then scrapped. Ultimately, it received mixed reviews and grossed just $49.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $67–80 million.
Looking back on it in a new interview with The Direct, Boone calls the project one that was ultimately unfulfilling:
“I was one of the writers on New Mutants. It’s so hard because it was so traumatic. The studio was sold, and we hit a pandemic… The studio was sold during the shooting, and then the pandemic happened when they decided to release it. And it just was such a – I had a wonderful time. I love the cast so much, but making that… It took so many years, and it was so unfulfilling, ultimately.”
Asked if he had any interest in revisiting these characters down the line, he’s pretty clear he’s done with it:
“We didn’t really get to make the movie we wanted to make. We made half the movie we wanted to make. And the release was so compromised by the pandemic… I’d rather just never do it again, just to be honest.”
Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga and Alice Braga starred in the film about a group of young mutants brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments.
