Though the film’s international release has been delayed in some key markets, Disney is locked in with the March 27th domestic release of their live-action “Mulan” film and can’t change now.
Fears that coronavirus will impact moviegoing seem to be immaterial in this case with the film headed for a solid $85-90 million opening weekend at the domestic box office. That would put it on par with last year’s “Aladdin” which debuted to a stellar $91.5 million before ultimately collecting over $1 billion worldwide.
“Mulan” cost a princely $200 million to produce and so needs that international coin, but the film’s biggest overseas market is China which has closed cinemas due to threats of coronavirus. No other major movies have plans to postpone or alter release plans at present.
Disney will first release “Onward” this weekend which was on track for $50 million earlier this week, but those estimates have been revised down to $47 million in the wake of the coronavirus scare and reviews which are positive but a little tepid.
