New “Indiana Jones” Set For Cannes

Lucasfilm

It’s official. The Cannes Film Festival has announced that the highly anticipated “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will premiere at this year’s edition of the festival.

The fest has sent out a tweet today confirming the film will have its premiere there on May 18th and Harrison Ford will be in attendance and walk up the famed red carpet stairs of the Palais des Festivals.

Also coming with him are director James Mangold and much of the key cast, including Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, and Ethann Isidore.

This is hardly the first time Indy has shown up at Cannes. Steven Spielberg’s 2008 fourth entry in the series “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” also premiered at the festival that year.

Set in 1969 New York, the new film sees archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones now mostly retired. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller (Mikkelsen) – a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program – wishes to make the world a better place as he sees fit.

Waller-Bridge co-stars as Indiana Jones’ goddaughter, Helena, who accompanies him on his journey this time. Also starring are Banderas as an old friend of Indy’s, Rhys-Davies reprising his role of Sallah, Holbrook as some kind of villain, along with Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, and Toby Jones.

The festival will also pay a special tribute to Harrison Ford for his career at the event. The James Mangold-directed “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opens in cinemas everywhere on June 30th.
