As we know, “The Night House” director David Bruckner is taking the helm of a revival of the “Hellraiser” franchise which is being made exclusively for Hulu.
That franchise began with the 1987 original directed by author Clive Barker who wrote the novella “The Hellbound Heart” upon which that film is based. However nine sequels increasingly diluted it long past the point of direct-to-video exhaustion.
With the new one, Bruckner tells SFX Magazine that the plan is for a “small reimagining” which will stick closely to Barker’s original material, but will offer a slightly updated approach:
“We can’t say anything about it yet…But it is something that we are actively working towards, and it is a joy and a dream for a filmmaker like myself to dive into that world.
All I’ll say is that we are aiming to be as true as we can to the original material. The Hellbound Heart is also a primary source of inspiration, as well as the original film. But then it is something of a small reimagining.”
This project is separate from HBO’s planned TV series take on the property which David Gordon Green will direct the pilot of, Michael Dougherty and Mark Verheiden are on board as writers and Barker himself will executive produce.
Barker’s involvement in the movie, if any, is unclear at this time.
