“Friday the 13th” franchise producer Sean S. Cunningham is allegedly working to not only get a new reboot of the “Friday the 13th” franchise off the ground, but also a reboot of the 1986 cult horror-comedy “House” according to Bloody Disgusting.
There have been no new film entries in the “Friday the 13th” franchise since 2009’s first reboot. In the years since, the franchise has been entangled in a legal quagmire, a dispute between Cunningham and the first film’s writer Victor Miller, which has seemingly prevented new entries.
Something is changing it would seem. As recently reported, Miller has joined forces with “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller on the Peacock prequel series “Crystal Lake”.
Then today, writer Jeff Locker told Bloody Disgusting how he got involved with Cunningham through an original project titled “The Night Driver” and how that has led to the early development of a potential new ‘Friday’:
“Sean hired me to do a rewrite on The Night Driver, and after working closely with director Jeremy Weiss and him on that, we naturally got to talking about Friday the 13th and House. Jeremy and I pitched our dream reboot of Friday the 13th – with Sean’s blessing to keep developing it with him.
Obviously, the prequel TV series has reignited interest about a new film so we’re hoping the surrounding excitement will inspire both sides to come together and give us Jason on the big screen again for the first time in fourteen years, but we also have a Plan B for a sequel to the original we think fans will absolutely love and should avoid any legal entanglements.”
Locker also spoke about the “House” reboot. The original starred William Katt as a troubled author, suffering from PTSD from the Vietnam War and a crumbling family life, who moves into his recently deceased aunt’s house and soon falls victim to a haunting there.
The original collected $22.1 million worldwide and had three sequels. The plan is to reimagine the concept with a whole new take, one which has an accompanying video game concept:
“The House reboot is both an update and reimagining of the classic series, centering around the birth of a haunted house. Lots of great scares and howl-at-the-screen laughs, plus we’re bringing back a few of your favorite monsters from the original for some really fun but equally terrifying kills.
He adds that he’s working on the script right now, and whilst he can’t say much, he does admit he is “having a f—ing BLAST!”.
