Previously rumored, it’s now official – a new “Dirty Dancing” film is in the works with 1987 original film’s star Jennifer Grey to both star in and executive produce.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced the film on the company’s earnings call Thursday where he also confirmed Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies,” “50/50”) will direct. Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis will pen the script.
The original film, about a teenager named Baby who spends a weekend with her family in the Catskills and breaks out of her shell when she starts to learn to dance from a rebellious dance instructor, grossed $218.3 million worldwide in 1987 and has since grown in popularity.
Grey’s co-star Patrick Swayze sadly passed away in 2009. The franchise has seen other activity though with the ‘sequel in name only’ 2004 film “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” which was poorly received, and an ABC telemovie remake in 2017 with Abigail Breslin in Grey’s role.
Feltheimer says the new one plans to be a big “romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.”
