With “Jungle Cruise” hitting this week, the film’s producers John Davis and John Fox have been out doing press rounds and have spoken to Collider about the upcoming new “Predator” movie “Skull”.

“10 Cloverfield Lane” helmer Dan Trachtenberg directs the project which will look at the Predator’s first journey to this planet. The project, which has almost finished filming, boasts a female Comanche warrior played by Native American actress Amber Midthunder and a script by Patrick Aison.

Davis says the film will have a back-to-basics approach akin to the original – namely a survival thriller in the wilderness relying on two foes trying to outsmart each other:

“It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force.

It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it. You can use your imagination. It is… early.”

Davis wouldn’t reveal the specific time period it’s set in but did reveal the idea has been in the works for several years and was slowly cooking away under much secrecy. He has nothing but praise for Trachtenberg:

“Watching dailies, you just understand how his vision is completely unique. He’s got his own language and it’s fresh and it’s cool, and it’s interesting.”

He also promises this is trying to be up there with the original film but understands that’s a high bar to clear:

“It’s going to be, I believe, the second best — or the first… or it may be equal to the first one. Right? I feel like the first one was a wonderful, interesting movie and I know what worked about it. I feel like we kind of never got back there again. We ended up in different places. I think this is a worthy complement to the first one. It’s going to be as good.”

Finally, he confirmes the film was conceived as an R-rated movie, but: “it could easily end up PG-13. I guess I’m going to find out what it has to be or what it is when it’s all cut together.”

No release date has been set for the film as yet.
