GKIDS has announced that filmmakers Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji will release their animated fantasy epic feature “The Deer King” in U.S. cinemas nationwide on July 15th.
Fan preview events of the Japanese-language version take place on the 13th in partnership with Fathom Events, while previews of the English-language version take place the following day.
Along with the full feature, preview audiences will view a special introduction from veteran animator Ando who has worked on films ranging from “Your Name” to “Spirited Away”. The movie then scores a limited theatrical release in select markets nationwide starting July 15th.
The story is set in the aftermath of a brutal war and follows a former soldier whose solitary existence is upended when a pack of wild dogs carrying a deadly and incurable disease attack, leaving only him and a young girl as survivors.
The pair seek out a simple existence in the countryside but are pursued by nefarious forces. Intent on protecting her at all costs, he must uncover the true cause of the plague ravaging the kingdom.
In other anime news today, Crunchyroll and Toei Animation have announced that the Tetsuro Kodama-directed “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” will have a global theatrical release this summer.
The film picks up after the events of “Dragon Ball Z” in Age 784 and follows familiar Dragon Ball characters and fan favorites, including Piccolo, Vegeta, and Goku, as they fight against the reformed Red Ribbon Army and destroy their “ultimate evil weapon.”
