New “Alien” Film Sets Its Main Cast

HBO, Netflix

The cast has been filled out for “Don’t Breathe” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” director Fede Alvarez’s new standalone “Alien” film at 20th Century Studios.

David Jonsson (“Industry”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Spike Fearn (“The Batman”) and Aileen Wu are all set to join the previously announced Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Isabela Merced (“Rosaline”) in this new installment of the sci-fi horror franchise.

The new film begins on a distant colony as a group of young people finds themselves in a fight for their lives with the xenomorph. How many and of what type isn’t clear at this time. Spaeny is taking the role that is being compared to Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley from the first four films.

Filming has now set a March 9th kick-off date in Budapest with Alvarez working from a script he co-wrote with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues.

Ridley Scott will produce the title which is unconnected to the previous films and is being made with the intention to premiere on Hulu – following the path Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey” took last year with the “Predator” franchise.

Alvarez pitched his take to Scott years ago and then late 2021 Scott asked if he was still up for it with Alvarez getting into gear. The film is separate to FX’s planned TV series which Noah Hawley is developing and aims to go into production later this year.
