The other weeks Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos predicted that the streamer’s dystopian South Korean thriller “Squid Game” would become Netflix’s most popular series ever.
His prediction has come true with the streamer announcing that the series has pulled in approximately 111 million viewers in its first nearly four weeks (25 days) on the service.
That easily beats out previous record holders “Bridgerton” which pulled in 82 million, “Lupin” with 76 million, and “The Witcher” with 67 million over their first 28 days. The series has topped Netflix charts in more than 80 countries and has proven an unprecedented global viral hit.
The success of this and other shows like “Lupin” and “Money Heist” is seen as a vindication of Netflix’s push to produce more international and non-English language localised content – an area other streamers aren’t pursuing.
