Around a dozen more names have signed on for Netflix’s upcoming live-action TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed comic series “Sandman”.
As previously reported, Tom Sturridge is taking on the lead role of Dream/Morpheus and his co-stars announced back in January include Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Asim Chaudhry as Abel and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne (a gender-swapped Lucien).
Today comes word that “The Good Place” and “Killing Eve” alum Kirby Howell-Baptiste has scored the key role of Dream’s sister Death while comedian Patton Oswalt will voice her trusted emissary Matthew the Raven.
“Doctor Who” and “Victoria” alum Jenna Coleman will play Johanna Constantine, an occult adventurist for hire and the great-great-great-grandmother of John Constantine. Mason Alexander Park (“Cowboy Bebop”) and Donna Preston will play the twins Desire and Despair.
Niamh Walsh (“Good Omens”) and Joely Richardson (“101 Dalmatians”) will play different age versions of Ethel Cripp – Roderick’s partner and mother to the dangerous John Dee played by “Harry Potter” alum David Thewlis.
Also, Kyo Ra plays Rose Walker, a young woman searching for her missing brother. She’s joined by her protector Gilbert (Stephen Fry) and her best friend (Razane Jammal). Finally Sandra James Young plays mysterious heiress Unity Kincaid.
New Line, Netflix and Warner Bros. Television are producing what was to be the most expensive TV series to date based on a DC Comics property (Greg Berlanti’s “Green Lantern” will reportedly surpass it now).
The original comic ran for 75 issues from 1989-1996 and began with the accidental capture of Dream and the journey that begins when he is released seven decades later.
Allan Heinberg (“Wonder Woman,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) and David S. Goyer (“Blade,” “Batman Begins”) are writing the series with Heinberg serving as showrunner. Eleven episodes have apparently been ordered.
