Jaco Snyman, the prosthetic lead on Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga “One Piece,” has teased one key creation for next season.
The show, which has dominated the Netflix charts for the past three weeks, has been renewed for a second season which is expected to cover much of (if not all) the Arabasta saga.
The season is expected to deal with the crew’s arrival in the Grand Line where they’re targeted by the criminal organization Baroque Works, whilst they become caught up in a pending war in the desert kingdom of Arabasta.
It’s also expected to introduce two new crew members from the manga – the ship’s doctor Tony Tony Chopper and possibly archaeologist Nico Robin.
Chopper is an outcast reindeer who ate a devil fruit and can now speak, think, and transform into a human. The character is decidedly not human looking for most of the series, which begs the question of how it will be pulled off on the show. Are they going with a fully CG creation or will they use a practical combination of prosthetics/animatronics?
Speaking to GameSpot, Snyman suggests the latter: “I’m looking forward to working on Tony Tony Chopper. That’s going to be interesting. I hope that we are able to follow the same approach as with Arlong when we get to it.”
Arlong, a walking/talking shark, was a creation of both prosthetics and visual FX makeup. The second season of “One Piece” is reportedly already written, and so it’s now a waiting game until the strikes are over that production can get going on the next season.
