Netflix has announced that it will stream the highly influential original “Mobile Suit Gundam” trilogy and its sequel “Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” for the first time in the United States starting this Friday.
In addition, the “Char’s Counterattack” sequel “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway” will premiere on the service. Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise Studio’s iconic series is a cornerstone of anime, and the condensed movie trilogy has never been available to stream legally in the U.S. until now.
The original films tell the story of Amuro Ray, a teenager who tries to stay neutral in the middle of a massive war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. He becomes the last hope of the Federation when he starts piloting the prototype weapon Mobile Suit Gundam.
Funimation started streaming the original series last year but these films are often regarded as the best introduction to the franchise.
