Netflix Sets “The Bad Guys” Xmas Special

Dreamworks Animation

Following its theatrical run earlier this year, DreamWorks Animation’s well-reviewed animated feature “The Bad Guys” arrived on Netflix on November 1st and immediately shot to the #1 position in the streamer’s top ten after just two days.

Now, Netflix has announced plans to debut a new and as-yet-untitled Christmas special next year featuring the gang of anthropomorphic animal master thieves who are all returning.

Bret Haaland will direct the special, which takes place before the events of the film. In it, the Bad Guys are ready to celebrate Christmas Day – a time when they plan to pull off the city-wide holiday heist of their dreams.

They’re soon forced to change their plans, however, when Christmas is cancelled. Instead of stealing, they do the unthinkable and put their villainous ways aside to help restore holiday cheer by giving to everyone in town.

The theatrical film grossed $250 million worldwide off a relatively low budget of $70 million. The voice cast included Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Anthony Ramos, Craig Robinson, Awkwafina, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, and Lilly Singh.

There’s no word on if the original cast will return for the special or if original writers Aaron Blabey, Etan Cohen, and Yoni Brenner are involved.
