Netflix has announced a March 17th premiere date for “Operation Varsity Blues,” a new documentary that hails from filmmaker Chris Smith.
Smith, who directed the celebrated Fyre music festival doco “Fyre” and executive produced media sensation “Tiger King,” here tackles the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal which ensnared Hollywood actors like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman along with financiers and other rich elite.
The doco promises to provide a deep dive into the methods used by Rick Singer to get the children of his wealthy clients into top schools – including admission test fraud, falsifying sports credentials and bribery of school officials.
The scandal made global front-page news, illustrating the United States’ ever-increasing wealth gap and how members of the 1% are able to rig the system in their favor.
The film will use a combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients, actor Matthew Modine will take on the role of Singer for those scenes.
