Netflix has handed out a series order to “Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles,” a new CG animated series based on Stan Sakai’s popular “Usagi Yojimbo” comic book series.
James Wan and his Atomic Monster label will executive produce the comedy-action series which will be taking viewers to a world that mixes high-tech images with period Japanese references.
In a statement, Sakai says he’s “involved in each step of the production” of the Gaumont and Netflix title and he is “enthusiastic with the direction we are going into”.
The series follows teenage Rabbit Samurai Yuichi, descendant of the great warrior Miyamoto Usagi, on his epic quest to become a true samurai.
He leads a ragtag team of misfit heroes – including a roguish bounty hunter, a cunning ninja, an acrobatic pickpocket, and a faithful pet lizard – as he battles depth-charging moles, metal-tipped winged bats, and monsters from another dimension, all in the pursuit to become the best samurai Usagi.
88 Pictures (“Fast & Furious Spy Racers”) will handle the series’ CG animation.
