While several of the projects were already announced and in development, Netflix has taken things a step further and officially acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for an undisclosed figure.
The deal gives the streaming giant access to the full catalogue of works from the famed British author and extends a relationship between the companies that began in 2018 with an initial pact for sixteen animated titles.
Already announced projects include Taika Waititi and Phil Johnston’s new “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” series and an adaptation of “Matilda The Musical” at Sony.
In the announcement today though, Netflix says it is eyeing the creation of a universe of projects based on Dahl properties. This mega-franchise would span animated and live action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theatre, and consumer products.
Dahl’s books also includes “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “The BFG,” “The Witches,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The Twits,” “Danny, the Champion of the World,” and “George’s Marvellous Medicine”. His books have sold more than 300 million copies and have been translated into 63 languages.
