Netflix has reportedly snagged world rights to Edward Berger’s new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” – among the biggest-budget films to ever come out of Germany.
Former Washington Post journalist Ian Stokell and producer and actor Lesley Paterson penned the script, the story begins with Baumer and his friends Albert and Muller voluntarily enlisting in the German army.
Full of excitement and patriotic fervour, the boys enthusiastically march into a war they believe in. But once on the Western Front, they discover the soul-destroying horror of WWI.
Production set to begin in March with Edward Berger directing and Daniel Bruhl starring in a supporting role. The story was previously adapted into Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning 1930 film and Delbert Mann’s Golden Globe-winning 1979 telemovie.
