Netflix has acquired “Sr.,” a documentary feature about maverick independent filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., with plans to give the film a big awards push this season.
Chris Smith (“Fyre,” “Operation Varsity Blues”) directs, and Robert Downey Jr. produces the film, which had its world premiere earlier this month at the Telluride Film Festival.
The film explores Downey Sr.’s life and work, such as “Putney Swope,” as well as themes including mortality and healing generational dysfunction.
Downey Jr. intends to hit the campaign trail on behalf of the project about his father, who died a year ago at age 85. The film will hit the streamer before the end of the year.
It marks yet another teaming between Netflix and Downey Jr.’s production company Team Downey following their previous collaboration on the fantasy series “Sweet Tooth”. A second season of that is on the way.
