With the ongoing strikes, studios and streamers have been scrapping a few productions they previously had in development or early pre-production.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) Netflix will reportedly do that with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride,” a remake of James Whale’s iconic classic movie “Bride of Frankenstein,” which will now apparently be shopped elsewhere.
In addition, the scooper indicates Penelope Cruz had an offer to play The Bride alongside Christian Bale attached as Doctor Frankenstein. Whilst Bale’s attachment was previously known, Cruz’s name being linked as a potential candidate is new.
The project would mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following 2021’s psychological drama “The Lost Daughter” and was targeting a production start sometime early next year.
Gyllenhaal’s husband Peter Sarsgaard is also said to be part of the cast, whilst the budget is rumored to be around $80 million.
The original 1935 film was a direct sequel to 1931’s “Frankenstein” and starred Elsa Lanchester in the title role alongside Boris Karloff as The Monster. Angelina Jolie’s name was floated as a potential to star in a previous incarnation back when Universal announced its Dark Universe plans.
