Netflix has unveiled a first-look photo from its currently untitled new adaptation of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s iconic 1953 French adventure thriller “The Wages of Fear”.
The film was based on the novel by Georges Arnaud and told the story of a group of four desperate men; each stuck in the same backwater desert town for different reasons. They agree to risk their lives transporting gallons of nitroglycerin across miles of dangerously-unsafe terrain to help extinguish a raging oil field fire.
The work was adapted again by “The Exorcist” and “The French Connection” filmmaker William Friedkin as his 1977 film “Sorcerer” – shifting the location to the South American jungle and the cargo to aged dynamite which is sweating nitroglycerin.
Clouzot’s film was considered a cinematic classic upon release and won awards, whereas Friedkin’s took time to earn that mark and is now considered an overlooked masterpiece.
This new take hails from French action director Julien Leclercq (“The Assault,” “Sentinelle”), who has adapted the original film with his “Ganglands” co-writer Hamid Hlioua.
Franck Gastambide, Alban Lenoir, Ana Girardot and Sofiane Zermani have signed on to star in the new film, which has just begun production and will roll out on Netflix worldwide next year.
Leclercq and Julien Madon will produce through Labyrinthe Films and TF1 Studio.
