Netflix Acquires “The Starling” Global Rights

Netflix has acquired world rights to the upcoming Ted Melfi-directed “The Starling” starring Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Kline, Chris O’Dowd and Timothy Olyphant. The deal, made on a script and four-minute promo reel, is said to be in the $20 million range.

Matt Harris penned the film in which McCarthy and O’Dowd play a married couple trying to rebuild their relationship after a tragedy. While her husband deals with his grief in recovery, she tries to heal by growing a beautiful garden in their backyard.

She soon finds herself repeatedly attacked by a starling that has built a nearby nest and so turns to a psychiatrist-turned-veterinarian with baggage of his own (Kline) who tries to help her. Daveed Diggs, Skyler Gisondo, Loretta Devine, Laura Harrier, Rosalind Chao and Kimberly Quinn co-star.

Melfi (“Hidden Figures”) completed principal photography on the film before the pandemic shutdown, and the project is currently in post production. Melfi, Dylan Sellers, Kimberly Quinn and Chris Parker produce the film.
