Netflix has acquired global rights to Ricky Staub’s forthcoming western drama “Concrete Cowboy” starring Idris Elba and “Stranger Things” alum Caleb McLaughlin.
Based on author Greg Neri’s drama novel “Ghetto Cowboy,” the story follows 15-year old Cole (McLaughlin) who moves in with his estranged father Harp (Elba) in Philadelphia where he is introduced to the vibrant urban cowboy subculture in the city.
It’s one that flourishes despite the surrounding poverty, violence, and encroachment of gentrification. The story is inspired by the real-life Fletcher Street Stables – a black urban horsemanship community which has existed in Philadelphia for more than a century providing safe haven for the neighborhood.
Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, Byron Bowers and Clifford ‘Method Man’ Smith co-star in the film which is eyeing a 2021 release. Staub co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Walser and makes his directing debut on the project which Elba, Walser, Lee Daniels, Tuckey Tooley, Jennifer Madelof and Jeff Waman produce.
