“District 9” and “Chappie” helmer Neill Blomkamp has been set to direct “RoboCop Returns,” a new entry in the iconic sci-fi action franchise that began with Paul Verhoeven’s famed 1987 original.
Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the upcoming “Terminator” film which Tim Miller is directing, is rewriting an old script from Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner who penned the original and wrote this as a direct sequel to Verhoeven’s original.
The 1987 film followed a cop who, on death’s doorstep, is used as an experiment to create a new type of patrolman – half man, half machine. He struggles with resurfacing memories and corrupt city officials, while the film itself included extreme visceral violence and satirical commentary of the 1980s.
The original was followed by two sequels, a mini-series, and a 2014 remake – all of which have been largely forgotten.
