NBC’s “Smash” Becomes A Stage Musical

A stage musical adaptation of the NBC series “Smash” is heading to Broadway with series producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron are all on board as lead producers on the stage musical.

Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) is directing from a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Some Like It Hot,” “Hairspray”) who wrote dozens of songs for the television series. Many of those songs will make the stage version alongside new material.

Also onboard are Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”) who are writing the book, whilst the show’s choreographer Joshua Bergasse is returning in that capacity.

The two-season series ended in 2012 and starred the likes of Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee and Christian Borle. It followed the process of mounting “Bombshell,” a stage musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe.

The Broadway adaptation of the show is said to “depart liberally” from the series. Spielberg says in a statement:

“‘Smash’ is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage. We now have an incredible creative team, and I’m looking forward to completing the ‘Smash’ journey which began with my producing partners over 10 years ago.”

Meron says the whole show aims to be accessible to fans and newcomers alike and serves as a valentine to Broadway musicals. The stage show is expected to debut during the 2024-2025 season. Casting to be announced at a later date.
