With the help of heavily discounted tickets down to $3, an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers attended their local multiplex for National Cinema Day yesterday.
That makes it the highest-attended day of the year for theaters, according to the National Association of Theater Owners.
More than 3,000 theaters across the country, including major chains like AMC and Regal, were involved in the one-day event which brought in $24.3 million. That’s 9% ahead of last Saturday, despite the heavily discounted admission.
Even with no new wide releases on offer, the country’s exhibitors reported sold-out shows throughout the day with “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “DC League of Super Pets,” “Bullet Train,” “The Invitation,” “Beast” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” and “Jaws” all enticing audiences.
