Music Video: Ferrell, McAdams In “EuroVision”

One of the world’s biggest annual events, the Eurovision Song Contest is famed for its mix of celebration, raw talent, high camp, and the sometimes downright bizarre as a little over two dozen countries across Europe (and beyond) compete with varying song styles (though mostly pop), elaborate outfits and stage direction.

Now Netflix has released the first footage from the Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams-led comedy feature “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” which comes in the form of a music video for the song “Volcano Man” complete with the pair in futuristic Viking warrior outfits singing across Icelandic vistas.

The film serves as both a satire of and tribute to the event, and the song plays like one of the catchy part-techno, part-ballad but mostly pop songs that often dominate the competition (which had to be cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Ferrell and McAdams star in the film as two Icelandic singers who are given the change to represent their country at the competition. Pierce Brosnan, Demi Lovato, Dan Stevens and Natasia Demetriou also star in the project which is now slated to open June 26th.

For those still confused by what EuroVision is, John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” did a segment several years ago that perfectly explains it. Similarly the competition itself managed to lovingly send up itself in 2016 with a spoof song performed during the interval at that year’s event. Both clips are included below:
