In an unexpected bit of news, Jeff Sneider’s Above the Line is reporting that the iconic CBS murder mystery series “Murder, She Wrote” is in the works at Universal Pictures.

The outlet claims that journalists turned writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who penned the upcoming GameStop short squeeze film “Dumb Money” which just premiered on the fest circuit and will shortly open, were allegedly tapped to write the screenplay prior to the writer’s strike.

Thus the pair can’t work on the project until said strike is over. The report also indicates former Sony chief and current “Spider-Man” franchise producer Amy Pascal is onboard. None of the trades have reported on the story thus far however, so consider this a rumor for now.

The late, great Angela Lansbury starred in the lead role of Jessica Fletcher, a mystery novelist who lives in Maine and uses her skills at deduction to figure out the identity of the extraordinary number of murderers she encounters in her life.

The series ran for twelve seasons and saw her nominated for an Emmy every year. Universal Television produced the series, which found a loyal audience and was seemingly only cancelled because of an unfortunate timeslot change in its final season.

Previously NBC attempted to reboot the property nearly a decade ago with Octavia Spencer to play the lead who would not be named Jessica Fletcher and would be a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth blogger. That version was scrapped.

All twelve seasons of “Murder, She Wrote” are currently available to stream on Peacock.
