Murai To Helm Samurai Film “Bushido”

FX

One of the most in-demand TV directors, Hiro Murai, has set his first feature project – an original samurai film titled “Bushido” which is being made at A24, Square Peg and 2AM.

Plot specifics are under wraps but it’s said to be a high-stakes action film set against the backdrop of feudal Japan.

Murai will direct from a script by Henry Dunham (“The Standoff at Sparrow Creek”). Both will produce alongside Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb and David Hinojosa.

Murai is best known for his Emmy-nominated and PGA Award-winning work as director and executive producer on “Atlanta,” “The Bear” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” along with notable work on HBO’s “Barry” and “Station Eleven”. He’s also known for his music video work, such as Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”.

The news comes as samurai tales have been resurging in recent years with FX’s celebrated “Shōgun” series and acclaimed games like “Ghost of Tsushima”.

A24 & Square Peg have multiple films on the way including “Eddington,” “Death of a Unicorn,” ” The Drama” and “Primetime”. A24 & 2AM have “Babygirl” and Celine Song’s “Materialists” coming.
