Multiple Sharks In “The Meg” Sequel

Warner Bros. Pictures

A first look at “Meg 2: The Trench” was screened at Warner Bros. Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation today with the trailer reportedly set to Heart’s song “Barracuda”.

The sequel to the 2018 action-horror movie sees “Kill List” and “Free Fire” helmer Ben Wheatley take over as director from Jon Turtletaub.

According to The Wrap, the clip reportedly begins with two land-bound prehistoric monsters eating a large bug with an onscreen text warning that for 65 million years one species ruled the world – cut to a Megalodon eating a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The action then shifts to the present where Jason Statham’s Jonas Taylor is recruited again by Cliff Curtis to hunt another giant creature in an undersea trench. Then things take a turn for the wild:

“Deep underwater, the team starts getting picked off by the biggest Meg anyone has ever seen. We then get various monsters attacking by land and by sea, with Statham almost getting eaten by a shark. We get more scenes of tourists almost getting eaten and a tentacled creature eating a helicopter. The teaser ends with Statham [with a sword], leaping into the air on a jet ski to face off against a shark.”

Others say there are scenes with the megs hunting in packs. The tone is said to be the same over-the-top fun/wildness as the first – pushed to slightly further extremes.

Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels and Sergio Peris-Mencheta co-star, whilst Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber penned the script. The first film took in over $500 million at the box-office.

“Meg 2: The Trench” swims into cinemas on August 4th.
