The writer’s strike kicked off at 12:01am this morning and has immediately impacted multiple productions across the board as many scripted projects have been abruptly halted. It’s the kind of shutdown on a scale the industry hasn’t seen since the early months of the COVID pandemic.
The most immediately impacted are the late-night talk shows with ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” CBS’ “The Late Show,” and NBC’s “Tonight” and “Late Night” all going on hiatus with repeats being shown.
The same goes for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” CBS’ “The Talk,” and HBO will also cease live production of both “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”. NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” for this week, to have been hosted by former SNL regular Pete Davidson, has been cancelled.
Writer’s rooms for several TV series have now closed, including multiple Emmy winner “Abbott Elementary,” Netflix animated series “Big Mouth,” Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” and Netflix’s popular “Cobra Kai”.
All of the scripts for the second season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” spinoff “House of the Dragon” have been completed for some time and so filming on the second season won’t be affected.
In addition, the Television Critics Association indicate they will cancel the upcoming in-person summer tour if the WGA and the AMPTP have not reached an agreement “in a timely manner”. That press tour was tentatively set to kick off on July 28th and run through until August 11th.
