Multiple Films Delayed By Swift Launch

The AMC-distributed concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” pulling in $37 million from the three big exhibitors in its first 24 hours of presales – nearly double that of the first day presales of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $20 million.

As a result, the current opening weekend projection for the film stands at $70 million for now and will likely go higher by the time the film opens in October. The appearance of this sudden box-office juggernaut has now sent multiple indie films fleeing from October to get out of its way.

As previously reported, Universal shifted “The Exorcist: The Believer,” which was to open on the 13th, to go a week earlier on October 6th.

Now, Kingdom Studios and Lionsgate drama “Ordinary Angels” starring Hilary Swank isn’t so lucky – being pulled from an October 13th date with no new release date announced – likely it will come after the strike when Swank can promote the pic.

Next, Meg Ryan was scheduled to return to big-screen romantic comedy with the holiday feature “What Happens Later” which she herself directed and co-stars in alongside David Duchovny.

Bleecker Street has pushed that film back and will now open it on November 3rd. The film follows a pair of ex-lovers who see each other for the first time in years when they find themselves snowed in, in-transit, at an airport overnight.

Finally, the Peter Dinklage romantic comedy “She Came to Me” has moved its release date back one week to October 6th from a September 29th date. That move however had nothing to do with Swift – rather with Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” being moved to a wide release on October 20th.
