Producer Todd Garner has confirmed that production has begun on the sequel to 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” film from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. Shooting is taking place in Queensland, Australia.
In a statement posted on Twitter, he says: “Off we go! I’m thrilled to start & trust me, we’ve listened” in terms of fan feedback to the reboot film which was criticised for various elements.
Garner says they have “learned from the mistakes” and are “committed to making the best MK2 possible”. Warner Bros. Pictures at present has not yet made any announcement regarding the sequel’s release date but if filming is taking place now, a mid-late 2024 or early 2025 release seems likely.
Simon McQuoid directs the new film from a screenplay written by “Moon Knight” head writer Jeremy Slater. Almost all the main cast from the first film are back, including scene-stealer Josh Lawson as Kano – despite his apparent on-screen death in the first film.
He’s joined by Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.
The film will also introduce Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Emperor Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
The new film will be produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, and E. Bennet Walsh.
