In the wake of several leaks regarding its reveal, NetherRealm Studios has now officially announced “Mortal Kombat 1” with the game’s first trailer.
Serving as a sequel, prequel and semi-reboot of the franchise, the new entry travels back far into the past and confirms the return of familiar faces – Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Kitana, Mileena, and Kung Lao.
The DLC of the eleventh game ended with Liu Kang taking Kronika’s time-twisting abilities and creating essentially a new timeline that resurrects his dear friends.
“Mortal Kombat 1” begins with “a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang” according to the developer, along with “reimagined versions of iconic characters”.
Also onboard is a new fighting system, game modes, and the series’ iconic fatalities. There’s also a new feature called Kameo Fighters which is dubbed a “unique roster of […] partners to assist you in battle.”
The title will be released on September 19th and will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
The “Mortal Kombat” series launched in 1992 and has sold over 72 million games to date.
